(Rain Location: Weis Center for the Performing Arts)
The Penn Central Wind Band is an all-volunteer ensemble comprising approximately forty musicians. Bucknell sponsors the PCWB as a service to the region. Its members come from some twenty towns and cities from the surrounding area. More than thirty of the band's members hold music degrees, and many are active music teachers and professional performers. The band is a recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll, awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation "recognizing community and adult concert bands of outstanding musical excellence." The PCWB presented its first concert during the summer of 1994, and has since performed many of the cornerstone works of the band repertoire: Lincolnshire Posy, the Holst suites, and Hindemith's Symphony in B flat-to name a few. The ensemble also draws upon great music from the Golden Age of the concert band, performing marches and orchestral transcriptions of such composers as Sousa, Suppé, Henry Fillmore, and Karl King. The band has performed for the conference of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and the national convention of the Association of Concert Bands. William Kenny, the band's conductor, is professor of music and associate dean of faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences at Bucknell.
